In a listed building in the Eixample district of Barcelona, a top floor is added to achieve two dwellings. The new dwellings will be set back from the main and rear facades, generating large terraces for the exclusive use of the new dwellings.
As a result of having a shallower depth than usual in the buildings of the Eixample, each house has proportionally much perimeter facade. The good orientation and the fact that the height frees from the shadows of neighbour buildings, allows to achieve very bright and sunny homes. Maximum continuity is sought between the interior and exterior space with floor-to-ceiling openings flush with the pavement that allow access to the terraces from all parts. Sliding shutters with adjustable slats provide the necessary sun protection.
The entire construction is erected on a support system of rolled steel portal frames to add as little weight as possible to the existing building. The profiles are raised one by one and welded on site, resting on the original load-bearing walls of the estate.
In order to generate the minimum possible overload, the enclosures are made of ceramic bricks with a plastered and painted finish, and the interior partitions and partitioning are made of plasterboard. The roof, with a simple gable geometry, is made of 100 mm rock wool sandwich panels, internally clad with a plasterboard ceiling hung from the laminated roof profiles.
