Complete renovation of a 1903 building in the neighborhood of Sants in Barcelona. The aim is to create a comfortable atmosphere with a functional design. The amplitude of the spaces, the natural qualities and neither luxurious materials nor sophisticated effects are desired.
The gallery, previously closed and occupied in large part by a small bathroom, opens up completely. The space is made as wide as possible, avoiding unnecessary visual obstacles and letting in as much natural light and sunlight as possible, all the way to the back of the room that will serve as a dining-living room.
Most of the original hydraulic floors have been preserved and recovered. They stand out in contrast with the white walls and ceilings, and their intense colors gain prominence. When recovery has not been possible, white marble and porcelain stoneware have been used.
The new elements, such as the custom-made furniture, are made of birch plywood and the windows of pine wood. The existing wood joinery, both interior and exterior, have been painted white to maintain a differentiation between the walnut and the pre-existing.
All materials used are of natural origin, sustainable and largely reused (marble, wood, mosaic). Thermal conditioning in winter is generated by hot water radiators. In summer, it relies on cross ventilation supported by ceiling fans.
